Sciatica can lead to pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that travels from your lower back down through your hip and leg. Using an inversion table may help temporarily relieve these symptoms by gently decompressing the spine, relaxing tight muscles, and reducing pressure on irritated nerves.

How much inversion helps usually depends on what’s causing your symptoms. Since sciatica isn’t a single condition with one simple fix, it’s important to understand what’s causing your pain first, so you can find the best way to feel better.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a set of symptoms rather than a diagnosis on its own. It describes pain and other feelings that follow the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down each leg.

These symptoms usually happen on one side of the body and can be different from person to person. You might experience:

  • A dull ache or sharp, shooting pain

  • Burning nerve pain in the buttock or leg

  • Tingling or a pins-and-needles sensation

  • Numbness in the leg, foot, or toes

  • Weakness in the leg or foot

  • Low back pain accompanied by leg pain

  • Pain that gets worse after sitting or standing for a long time

  • For some people, these symptoms come and go. For others, they can make daily activities like walking, driving, sitting, or sleeping difficult.

How Does Inversion Table Therapy Work?

An inversion table uses your body weight and gravity to gently stretch your spine. As the table tilts backward, it helps reduce the spinal compression from daily activities like sitting and standing.

This gentle elongation helps create more space between the vertebrae in the lower part of your spine, easing the pressure on nerves. It also stretches the muscles and tissues that support your back, which can help relax tight muscles often linked to sciatic pain.

If your sciatica is caused by pressure on a nerve root, this stretching may help relieve that pressure and reduce pain, tingling, or numbness.

You don’t have to be completely upside down to experience benefits. Partial inversion can still reduce spinal loading while allowing you to remain within a comfortable, controlled range.

However, inversion doesn’t fix all causes of sciatic pain and isn’t a replacement for seeing a healthcare professional. What it can do is temporarily reduce spinal pressure and relax tense muscles, which might make moving around easier and more comfortable.
